caprasia

Caprasia in Iberian meant “the land of the goats,” and the Caprasia label bears tribute to a time when wild goats ran free and the region’s original winemaking pioneers practiced viticulture between the Sierra Cabrillas and the River Cabriel. All Caprasia wines are sourced from the Finca Alfaro estate in Requena.

Authentic wines from ancient terroirs

Situated in a mildly sloping valley, the Finca Alfaro estate has a soil composition of mostly clay, while parcels lower down and close to the river have alluvial soils of sandy loam and large round stones, with gravelly subsoil. Most of the vines are trellis-trained; however, viticultural practices vary by specific vineyard block to ensure maximum plant equilibrium. The estate’s century-old Bobal vines are pruned in the “gobelet” or bush vine contour.

Terracotta amphora

We follow traditional methods of winemaking to maximize varietal typicity and terroir expressiveness, including stalk removal, a gentle crush of the grapes, and pre-fermentation at low temperature. A portion of our Caprasia Bobal is aged for 6 months in 150-liter terracotta amphora containers.

grapes

In Utiel-Requena, Bobal is the undisputed queen, but Vegalfaro also crafts wines of excellent quality from the native and well-adapted Macabeo grapes, as well as Merlot and Chardonnay, all of which are cultivated in the Finca Alfaro estate and released under the Caprasia label.
